CLIMATE CHANGE IN SHORT

The Earth’s atmosphere is transparent, allowing light to enter and warm its surface. Some of the gases in the atmosphere, including water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, are called greenhouse gases because they trap some of the resulting heat. Without the natural greenhouse effect, much of the sun’s warmth would be lost to space, and the surface of the world would be about 61 degrees Fahrenheit colder, too frigid for m0ost forms of life. Global warming also has the potential to transform many of the world’s natural ecosystems over next century, causing, for example, one-third of the Earth’s forested area to undergo major shifts in composition
